Primary Function / Primary Goals / Objectives:
Develops and applies advanced theories, methods and research techniques to the investigation and solution of complex technical problems; implements large cost reduction programs.  Develops processes that lead to shortened cycle time; makes major impact decisions.

As a technical specialist, is assigned problems which require unique design/research approaches to problems which vary from standard techniques and procedures.  Is routinely called on to troubleshoot engineering problems critical to the Division or Corporation.

Responsible for the design, construction, and/or maintenance of the physical facilites, equipment, processes, control systems or utilities.  Supports the area in industrial engineering, contract administration, environmental control, safety, process design, controls and instrumentation, technology application, utilities, or equipment design and build.

1.  Design, specify and implement product packaging  for worldwide markets.

2.  Source or develop new or improve existing packaging commodities and equipment for
internal and Third Party Manufacturing product lines.

3.  Identify design concepts, prototypes, test protocols and vendor relationships for
assuring the best technical and quality parameters are met for current and new division
commodities.  Identify and specify compliant packaging for storing and shipping current
and new products.  Control of costs and consideration of inventories is a vital portion
of these tasks.

 

 

Major Responsibilities:
Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

Collaborates across Divisions to develop standards; conducts investigations to confirm engineering theories.  Analyzes results and applies technical judgment in making substantial adaptions and modifications.

Investigates/recommends novel technology and applications; develops, evaluates, implements strategic initiatives, leads project/program and technical staff to develop significant new products or processes.

Key Responsibilities may include:
1.  Perform economic analysis and feasibility studies for the installation of new equipment or facilities and/or modification and revision of existing equipment and facilities.
2.  Develop cost estimates, review estimates with manager, and consult with operating managers regarding proposals for capital expenditures, facilities repairs and revisions.
3.  Investigate, develop and recommend alternatives for design, procurement and installation of new equipment or systems for the optimal utilization and control of resources.
4.  Specify equipment materials and shop work required; review with manager and initiate requests for labor and material resources.
5.  Provide technical assistance and information to Corporate engineering and outside consultants, contractors, vendors, suppliers and various departments within the Company.
6.  Participate and/or assist other engineers in the design of process equipment or systems for optimum performance.
7.  Direct the start-up of new and troubleshoot existing facilities/equipment to ensure optimal operation and performance.
8.  Assist in the training of personnel required for the operation of facilities/equipment.
9.  Assist managers in planning for new facilities.  Provide a liaison service on any subject for Division/Corporate engineering.
10.  Provide maintenance technical service.  Develop preventative maintenance programs and recommend spare parts.

——- For Principal Packaging Engineer the following specifics apply: ———-

1.  Identify, develop and implement quality, cost effective and environmentally conscious
packaging commodities for the division’s major products.  Incumbent interfaces with
Marketing, Purchasing, Planning, Research & Development, Third Party Manufacturing,
Incoming Quality Assurance, Supplier QA, Regulatory, Labeling Standards & Specs, and
Field Sales.  The incumbent regularly communicates with Packaging professionals in
other Abbott divisions and interfaces with support personnel in domestic and international sites.

2.  Provide accurate documentation to support the buying and handling of new and existing
packaging.  Documentation includes commodity specifications, Bills of Material (Package
Masters), Change Requests, compliance resolution (CAPA) forms, Deviations and
Purchasing Waivers.  The incumbent Principal Engineer also controls tooling (mold costs)
and initiates RCEs regarding new packaging lines.

3.  Provide technical support and packaging expertise to internal production, off-site Third
Party Manufacturing plants, and Abbott international plants.

 

 

Accountability / Scope/Budget:
Routinely provides analyses and advice to senior management; has direct contacts with outside consultants, technical counterparts from other Divisions and Companies, and key vendors.

Supervision received is administrative.  Assignments given as broad general objectives and limits.

Establishes the approach and test procedures to be used, the estimated time, expense and staffing requirements for completions.  Specifies equipment, materials and supplies required for the completion and implementation of technical projects.  Is accountable for success of projects and manages all financial aspects of projects.

May direct efforts of others.  May coordinate outside resources for projects.  Provides input to the team manager on staffing decisions.

Provides technical mentoring for the discipline.

——- For Principal Packaging Engineer the following specifics apply: ———-

1.  The Principal Packaging Engineer serves as back-up to the Department Manager in the
Manager’s absence, assuming several Managerial responsibilities outside of personnel
issues.  This position assumes the role and communicates at the highest level of Program
Management regarding product packaging issues.

2.  The Principal Packaging Engineer is responsible for assigning action items to program
participants and for communicating program objectives and status to upper Management.

3.  This position interfaces with outside vendors, consultants and other packaging
professionals in organizations such as the IOPP (Institute of Packaging Professionals), and
may interface with representatives from the FDA, EPA, DOT and the U.N.

 

Qualifications

Education:

B.S. Engineering or equivalent, in order to analyze and solve technical problems.

 

 

Background:

Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and requirements for infant formula and nutritionals.

Progressive technical experience and demonstrated competence in their field.  8+ years related experience.
