Overview

The Laurasian Institution (TLI) is looking for outgoing, warm-hearted teachers with a passion for international exchange to join our team of Local Coordinators for exchange students. Our programs bring high school exchange students from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Germany, and Spain to the U.S. to attend an American public high school for one year and live with a volunteer American host family. As a Local Coordinator, you will play a vital role in our nation’s public diplomacy efforts, creating positive impressions about America, breaking stereotypes, and fostering mutual understanding and respect.

We are looking for Local Coordinators in the greater Columbus area, including South Columbus, Grove City, Powell, Westerville, Westland, New Albany, and Clintonville.

This is a great part-time job for a teacher that can provide supplemental income. Much of the time-intensive work of finding host families can be done in the summer, when teachers have free time. (Coordinators do have responsibilities throughout the school year, supporting the exchange student and host family and providing monthly reports to the program.) Teachers who find host families for 4 students by July 15 can earn total stipends of up to $4000 and a trip to Seattle to visit our student orientation program in August!

Your role as a Local Coordinator is to create the very best exchange environment for both students and host families. As a Local Coordinator, you play a vital role in finding host families for students, helping students achieve familiarity with life in the U.S. and better understand American culture, and creating an invaluable cultural experience for the host families and the community.

Local Coordinator Responsibilities:
-Understand The Laurasian Institution’s procedures and program guidelines
-Find qualified host families and high quality schools for exchange students
-Provide an orientation to the host families and students
-Maintain monthly contact with host families and exchange students throughout the school year
-Provide monthly reports to TLI regarding the students’ progress
-Organize quarterly gatherings of area exchange students
-Be available for the family and student if an emergency arises during the academic year

Required Qualifications:
-Experienced teacher with strong community connections (others who enjoy working with high school students and families and are well connected to their community through school, church, or community organizations are also welcome to apply)
-Experience with international students or diverse cultures a plus
-Experience in mediation and/or counseling a plus
-Valid driver’s license
-Ability to pass a criminal background check

Compensation:
-Stipend of $1000 for each exchange student for whom the Local Coordinator is responsible, with the possibility for a bonus based on meeting early placement deadlines
-Contributing to greater international understanding
-Helping an exchange student realize his/her dream of attending an American high school

As a Local Coordinator, you will be at the very heart of the exchange student program and a true ambassador for international understanding.
